Yarn producer Spinrite to boost Beaufort’s textile sector

Gov. Bev Perdue announced that Spinrite Services LLC, a manufacturer of craft yarns, will locate a facility in Beaufort County. The company plans to create 90 jobs and invest $9.1 million over the next three years in Washington. The project was made possible in part by an $180,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

“Creating jobs is my top priority,” Gov. Perdue said. “Spinrite’s expansion is the result of our top-ranked education and workforce training programs and highlights why we need to fund them. Those programs are an essential ingredient in our nationally acclaimed business climate that attracts companies like Spinrite and enables them to thrive.”

Spinrite Limited Partnership, based in Listowel, Ontario, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Spinrite Acquisition Corp. Spinrite is a leading manufacturer and marketer of craft yarns sold throughout North America. The company has a diverse hand-knitting product line sold under its Bernat, Patons, Lily Sugar n’ Cream, Peaches and Crème, and Phentex brands.

Spinrite acquired certain assets, including the Washington facility, from Caron International, Inc in 2011. Workers who were laid off following that acquisition will have an opportunity to apply for new positions with Spinrite.

Salaries will vary by job function, but the total payroll for the new jobs will exceed $2 million.

Pak textile bodies seek ban on cotton & yarn exports

Several textile associations in Pakistan have urged the Government to either ban raw cotton and coarse yarn exports from the country or levy a 15 percent duty on their exports, so as to safeguard the domestic textile industry against rising cost of doing business and competition.

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association’s (APTMA) representative Yasin Siddik, Pakistan Apparel Forum’s (PAF) Jawed Bilwani, Pakistan Towel Manufacturers Association’s (PTMA) Feroze Azam and Karachi Cotton Association’s (KCA) Shakeel Ahmad made the plea, while highlighting the continuous decline in exports of value-added textile items from the country.

The associations noted that cost of doing business for the value-added textile industry has increased, as exports have led to shortage of raw cotton, cotton yarn and polyester fibre, the basic raw materials used by the domestic value-added textile industry.

Hence, the textile bodies demanded that the Government introduce a levy of 15 percent duty on export of raw cotton and coarse yarn or ban exports of the same.

Mr. Ahmad said that even while retaining high-quality, Pakistan’s cotton and coarse yarn are still cheaper than those from other countries. He added that the Government is acting biased towards the ginning sector and it is neglecting the interests of the country’s biggest employment and foreign exchange generating value-added textile industry.

USDA revises global cotton output estimates

Global cotton production is expected to be 122.84 million bales (1 bale = 480 pounds) in 2011-12, less than 123.42 million bales estimated in the December report released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

According to the January report of the USDA, world beginning cotton stocks are expected to be 45.35 million bales in 2011-12, lower than 45.49 million bales in its previous month estimate.

Global cotton imports are expected to be 36.51 million bales, lower than 36.55 million bales in its December report and cotton use is expected to be 109.99 million bales, smaller than 111.34 million bales given in its last report.

Worldwide exports are anticipated to reach 36.52 million bales, against 36.57 million bales and global ending stocks are projected to be 58.35 million bales, larger than 57.67 million bales from its December report.

TN approves Rs 90 million subsidy for textile parks

The proposal for providing subsidy of up to Rs. 90 million to all the textile parks to be established in the south Indian State of Tamil Nadu under a consolidated scheme has been approved by the State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The Chief Minister has approved the proposal with a view to help the State’s textile industry attract more investments, which, in turn, would lead to higher employment generation.

The Jayalalithaa government has been taking several steps to uplift the State’s textile industry by way of introducing several new technologies and innovative ideas.

A consolidated textile park scheme, aimed at ensuring development of the State textile industry through establishment of new parks and attracting new investments, is in existence since 2005.

According to an official release, the CM has given her approval for providing subsidies up to a maximum of Rs. 90 million to the textile parks to further intensify their development, and has also directed establishment of a monitoring committee to oversee implementation of the same.

Last month, the State CM sanctioned allocation of a sum of Rs. 1.274 billion to 15 common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in Tirupur.

Effluents released by 754 dyeing units and 20 CETPs flowed into the nearby Noyyal river and other water reservoirs meant for irrigation. Hence, based on a petition made by the farmer’s federation, the High Court directed implementation of CETPs.

Brazilian cotton exports to rise 42.4%

In early 2011, sellers were optimistic regarding cotton prices and, in March, quotes hit record levels in both domestic and international markets. This led to an increase in the planted area and global supply moved up. The demand, however, has not followed the same pace. Cotton was traded at record values, so, purchasers were looking for cheaper alternatives.

Consequently, the demand for artificial fiber has grown, reducing the demand for cotton yarn. Cotton quotes shrank, but purchases of natural fibers, such as cotton, did not increase quickly as expected.

In the first three months of 2011, values in both the domestic and international markets upped, hitting a record in March, despite the low liquidity. In that time, agents wondered what limit quotes would hit.

Prices moved up sharply until mid-March due to an increase in consumption, to a reduction in the planted area in important producing countries in the 2009/10 season and to the shrinking of world stocks.

In the second fortnight of March, quotes were high and led purchasers to refrain from trading, which pushed down prices in the domestic market.

In April, values dropped by a whopping 24.35%, the highest negative variation in a month of all Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics - CEPEA data, started in July 1996.

Expectations of a higher world supply pushed down cotton prices until mid-2011, when weather problems in many regions in the world, including Brazil, caused uncertainties about the world production. Meanwhile, the demand became steadier.

Scarce local inputs trouble Indonesian batik weavers

Indonesia’s traditional batik weavers are finding it difficult to obtain locally made inputs like textile yarns and colouring agents, which is forcing the majority of the textile producers to use chemical colouring agents, in spite of being aware that these are toxic and even harmful to the environment.

During a discussion on Indonesian cultural heritage, Irma Hutabarat, Chairwoman of Miyara Sumatera Foundation, said in spite of batik textiles forming a part of the country’s cultural heritage, not many people are keen on using local textiles.

Ms. Irma said there are some specific kind of batik textiles that are believed to be valuable and such rare pieces representing cultural legacy and art need to be preserved.

Making a mention of Ulos sibolang, she said, the blue-coloured traditional woven fabric hailing from the ethnic of Batak in North Sumatra is now becoming extinct. The fabric has an important place in the life of Batak communities as people of these communities wear it during traditional ceremonies to commemorate the joy of life, she added.

Egypt Resolves to Revive Closed Down Factories

In order to boost the development of trade and industry, the Egyptian government will try to resolve challenges faced by around 1,500 closed factories, which include those in the textile value chain.

This was revealed by Mahmoud Eissa, Minister of Trade and Industry, said in a statement. He added by saying that, the government will seek solutions on an urgent basis, so these closed factories may resume production at the earliest.

Abu El Sebaa, located in Mahalla and which was one of the biggest textile exporter from Egypt has been revived and resumed production recently.

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) and the Industry Modernization Center (IMC) have been made the nodal agencies for the revival of these companies and will conduct due diligence of these factories once they receive the proposals from them.

Most of the factories were closed down on insistence orders from their respective banks as they could not pay off their debts.

Hyderabad textile traders discuss alternatives to VAT

The textile traders of Hyderabad agitating against the Value Added Tax (VAT) have shown their readiness to step back if the government agrees to replace the existing tax regime with a new fixed rate.

Considering that in spite of strong opposition from the textile traders, the government has not eased its stand on VAT on textiles.

Textile traders from entire Hyderabad convened a meeting, where they decided to present various alternatives for VAT before the government.

Justifying why they cannot accept VAT levy at present, textile traders said that if VAT is made applicable in the State, they would suffer a loss of business, as this would raise the cost of textiles in Andhra Pradesh as compared to other parts of the country.

Also they noted that VAT payment is also not easy for them as 90 percent of the State’s textile sector is unorganized, consisting of small traders, majority of whom, do not maintain proper books of accounts.

The accused the authorities for detaining vehicles loaded with textiles, which do not have tax identification number and also issuing notices to textile traders.

He hails from the third generation of a family into the textiles business since the last 45 years and is responsible for exports skyrocketing growing ten-fold in the last 5-6 years. One of the companies in the group is the fourth largest producer of polyester yarns in India producing more than 1,10,000 tons per annum from polyester chips.

Meet Jatin Gupta, scion of the Gupta family – Surat, whose group turnover is in excess of Rs 11 billion or US $250 million. Jatin aged 30, studied at St Xaviers School in Surat and completed his under-graduation and post-graduation in business management from University of Hertfordshire, UK, majoring in finance and accounts.

Jatin stays in Mumbai and shuttles regularly between Mumbai – the corporate headquarters and Surat, where the major manufacturing activities of the textile group are concentrated.

When in school, Jatin used to be a sports freak and loved roller skating, playing table tennis, lawn tennis and badminton and still pursues these activities, whenever time permits. Green production can help Bangladesh textile industry

Adoption of clean and resource efficient production techniques can greatly help the 1,700 textile washing, dyeing and finishing units to save their money as well as resources, according to Syed Nayeem Emran, Team Leader of Textiles and Apparels of South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF), an organization managed by International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Citing an example, he said, adoption of clean and resource efficient production techniques helped 12 factories in Dhaka to jointly save one million USD and 800 million litres of water annually.

The 12 factories formed a part of the pilot project conducted by the IFC, in association with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the UK Department for International Development, with an intention to help the Bangladeshi industries to meet the rising pressure from the side of global buyers for adherence of environmental norms, as also the increasing regulatory as well as societal pressure for compliance of the same.

Speaking at a seminar titled "Resource Efficiency and Environment Compliance Initiatives to Sustain Export Growth", held on the sidelines of BATEXPO 2011 in Dhaka, former President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Tipu Munshi said Bangladesh should focus on retaining its increasing apparel export growth and environmental norms at its factories.

Ministry favours Indian textile sector debt restructuring

The Textiles Ministry is working to ease the difficulties of the ailing textile industry, and as a part of its endeavour it recently convened a meeting with the Indian Banks Association to discuss several issues like probabilities of streamlining the loans of the sector.

Though the meeting with the bankers and the domestic textile industry representatives did not deliver any firm output, Textiles Secretary Rita Menon said that the Ministry would continue its efforts with the Reserve Bank of India, Finance Ministry and Department of Financial Services.

“We will decide what could be a perfect-mix of backing that can be offered to the industry at least to ease the working capital crisis”, she said.

She stated that the Ministry is firm on building pressure upon the government for a fresh restructuring, which she said is essential for the power loom as well as silk industry.

The textile industry which suffered on account of a steep drop in cotton prices, sluggishly moving local demand and restrictions on cotton yarn exports imposed during December 2010 has been constantly pushing for streamlining of Rs. 1,000 billion worth of loans.

NPIA Seeks Aid For Upgrading Pashmina Testing Lab

With an aim to upgrade their Pashmina testing laboratory, Nepal Pashmina Industries Association (NPIA) has sought financial support from the Government. The association has sought a sum of NPR 10 million to fund acquisition of high-tech machine to facilitate testing of Pashmina and to enhance the laboratory infrastructure.

As claimed by the association, presently the laboratory lacks proper infrastructure and the machine currently in use has turned obsolete, as it fails to comply with international standards. The yarn testing laboratory also does not have satisfactory temperature maintenance and adequate space mandated to upgrade it to international standards.

Meanwhile, the Optical Fibre Diameter Analyser machine imported by the Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology after obtaining seven million NPR in grant from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) also lacks the ability to precisely distinguish the Pashmina yarn which is Chyangra wool.

Global Cotton Area to Fall 8% by 2012-13 - ICAC

After jumping to record highs in 2010/11, cotton prices dropped sharply in the current season, reducing farmers’ incomes and decreasing for the first time in three years the attractiveness of this crop when compared to that of its main alternatives.

As a result, the Secretariat projects global cotton area to contract in 2012/13 by 8% to 33.3 million hectares and production to decrease by 6% to 25.1 million tons. Cotton production is expected to decline in most large producing countries, with the exceptions of the United States, Uzbekistan, and Australia.

Following two seasons at depressed levels, global cotton mill use is forecast to start growing again in 2012/13.This expectation is highly dependent on the assumption of a recovery in global economic growth that would stimulate purchases of textile products and consumption of raw fibers. The Secretariat forecasts global cotton mill use to rise by 3% in 2012/13 to 25.0 million tons, driven by Asia.

India Likely to Export 8mn Cotton Bales This Season

India is likely to export 8 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) of cotton during the current season which began on October 1, 2011, the country’s Parliament has been informed.

In a written reply to the Lower House of Parliament, the Minister of State for Textiles, Ms. Panabaka Lakshmi, said the Cotton Adivsory Board (CAB) has estimated the country’s cotton exports during 2011-12 cotton season to be 8 million bales, after reviewing the cotton availability in the country on November 15.

Last year, India’s cotton exports stood at 7 million bales. Initially, the Government had put a cap on the export of cotton at 5.5 million bales in view of the rising prices of the natural fibre. Subsequently, the Government allowed export of another 1 million bales and thereafter it completely removed restrictions on the export of the raw material in September this year and permitted cotton exports under the Open General Licence (OGL).

CAB has estimated India’s cotton production this season at 35.6 million bales compared to 32.5 million bales produced last season.

Offers for industrial cord in East China market is in the range of 32,000-33,000 Yuan / ton, in terms of acceptance.

‘Indian spandex usage growing at 15%’ - Mr Gupta, Indorama

The delegates at the second session on day-1 of the International Denim Conference were enthralled by a scintillating presentation on ‘Spandex – Growth and Application’ from Mr RD Gupta – Business Head, Indorama Industries Ltd.

Spandex is a manmade fibre in which a long chain synthetic polymer is composed of at least 85 percent of segmented polyurethane. It is a lightweight fibre used to make stretchable clothing. First produced in the early 1950s, spandex was initially developed as a replacement for rubber.

Bayer and DuPont together invented spandex and received a patent. DuPont later began industrial production and in the 1960s, Asahi Kasei and Toyo Boseki too developed production technology of spandex.

Yarn Prices Slip Further : Chinese Markets

The prices of pure cotton yarn, polyester/cotton yarn and rayon yarn slipped further in Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces of China.

The last few days saw a decline in spot price of cotton yarn owing to bearish market outlook. The downstream weaving factories and distributors are purchasing cotton yarn in small quantities and the prices of yarn were dropped by mills to win the limited market.

Currently, the mainstream price of cotton yarn C32s is 26,500 yuan/ton or lower, while the price for higher qualities is about 27,500 yuan/ton.

Similarly, the price of polyester/cotton yarn continued to slip further due to poor transactions in the market. Currently, T63/C35 yarn 32s is being sold at 20,000-20,500 yuan/ton.

As for rayon yarn market, the whole industry chain is in a sharp decline. Several manufacturers are holding large inventory of rayon yarn and hence are selling products at a substantially reduced price. The turnover still remains unsatisfactory. Currently, the market price of R30s is 21,000-21,500 yuan/ton, while the lower promotional price is at 20,500-21,000 yuan/ton.

Textile Sector Slowly Losing Ground in Gujarat

Textile manufacturing sector, the second largest employer in the west Indian State of Gujarat, is slowly losing its ground in the State, according to a report.

The report, based on a research conducted by Knight Frank India, provides details about five Indian States – Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu – that are said to possess high manufacturing potential.

The study says nearly 200,000 people are employed in Gujarat’s textile industry, which forms 18 percent of overall workforce in the State’s manufacturing sector. It, however, adds that the share of textiles in the State’s total production has declined to 6 percent at present from 12 percent a decade ago.

Similarly, the number of textile production units in the State have declined by 22 percent to 1,523 from 1,957 ten years ago. In comparison, the number of textile manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu has grown more than 1.5 times during the last decade.

Using Knight Frank Output Specialization Matrix, the research says textile falls under the ‘Lost Opportunity’ quadrant in Gujarat, and explains that the State is gradually losing its specialization in the textile sector compared to other States in the country.

In fact, Tirupur and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu are fast displacing Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat as the leading textile centres of India.

Downward trend continues in Chinese yarn markets

Downward trend is continuing in yarn markets of Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces of China.

Spot price of cotton is witnessing a downward trend in Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces. Overall cotton textile chain is weak. Orders taken at the Canton Fair were not satisfactory. Thus, there is no good news to boost the cotton yarn market.

Currently, there is increased level of pure cotton yarn inventory with mills. This is also pushing the prices downward. At present, the mainstream price of cotton yarn C32s is in the range of 26,500-27,000 yuan/ton, while the price of higher quality yarn is in the range of 27,500-28,000 yuan/ton.

The price of polyester/cotton (P/C) yarn continued with its declining trend owing to a dip in the prices of cotton and polyester staple fibres. Currently, the mainstream price of CT63/C35 yarn 32s is 20,500-21,000 yuan/ton, while the price of lower quality yarn is 20,000 yuan/ton.

Similarly, the price of rayon yarn is also maintaining a downward trend. It is because the price of viscose staple fibre is continuing to fall and the downstream market of rayon yarn products is shrinking. The decline in trade volume of rayon yarn is, in turn, accelerating the decline in price of viscose staple fibre. At present, the mainstream price of rayon yarn R30s is 22,000-22,500 yuan/ton, while the price of higher levels is 23,000 yuan/ton.

The moment you enter Shaleen Toshniwal’s corner cabin, you are struck by the floor to ceiling polished wood paneling adorning the walls and you cannot but miss the photos pasted or hung behind his chair and on the table.

They include a snap of his taking part in the Mumbai Marathon, a photo of the Cricket Club of India (CCI) team of which he will be the captain this season, another of the Toshniwal family and many more. On his desk he has lined up photos of his two daughters.

Meet Shaleen Toshniwal, the 34-year old, executive director of Banswara Syntex –– which notched up revenues of Rs 8.08 billion in 2010-11, up just a shade below 32 percent and profit after tax grew at a blistering pace of around 52 percent in the same period. He is the second son of Mr RL Toshniwal – CMD of the company.

Shaleen who is looking after the garment division of Banswara Syntex too has clocked consistent growth rates of 25-30 percent each year since its inception in 2004, and will be an Rs 1.2 billion business by the current fiscal year-end, with plans to more than double it by 2015.

This should not sound impossible considering the scorching growth rates chalked out by the division as well as Banswara Syntex, in the last few years.

Shaleen has been brought up in Mumbai and has studied at GD Somani School in South Mumbai. He did his junior college from HR College and completed his Bachelors in Management from Bentley College in greater Boston area in the US.

New yarns from Wykes for stretch knitwear

The company has launched BILOREX 7338, an ‘invisible' low power plating support yarn which is expected to provide great shape retention power and steadiness even after multiple washes.

The new yarn, BILOREX 7338, is just 30 denier in count, which makes it almost invisible while using. It, thus, removes the requirement of dyes to match various shades, and thus results in reduced waste generation with no residues.

A seven-day silk awareness programme was inaugurated at north Paravoor in Kerala.

The programme has been organized by the Silk Mark Organisation of India together with Charutha silks. On display at the expo are natural silk items and weavings of pure silk.

A senior official of the Silk Mark, Babu Giridharan, stated that, the event has been organized with a view to generate awareness amongst people on the modes through which they can differentiate pure silk from imitation.

Experts from the organization would enlighten the visitors at the fair on various modes through which they can identify authentic silk.

Silk Mark is a mark for quality assurance that the Silk Mark Organisation of India provides, which is a society supported by the Central Silk Board, an apex body for development of silk industry in India.

Assessment on behavior of Dryarn fabric

The Turin Polytechnic's Department for Materials Science and Chemical Engineering and the Associazione Tessile e Salute (Fabrics and health Association) recently wound up a project to evaluate the thermo-physiological comfort of a 100% Dryarn fabric, compared with equivalent fabrics in cotton, nylon and polyester. This Highly informative study was performed by the LATT laboratory in Biella and the results showed that Dryarn is superior to the other fibres analysed in terms of thermo-regulation, breath ability and drying speed.

During the various phases of the project, Dryarn was subjected to physical laboratory tests aimed at evaluating its thermo-physiological comfort characteristics and to trials involving the wearing of the fabric in a climate-controlled room to test the actual behaviour of a Dryarn T-shirt during sports activity.

PHYSICAL LABORATORY TESTS: The fabric made of Dryarn microfibres was subjected to a comparison test with equivalent fabrics in cotton, nylon and polyester. The results of the tests show that Dryarn guarantees higher performance compared to the other fabrics, in terms of lightness of weight, drying speed and ability to allow perspiration to escape easily: properties that translate into an excellent capacity for thermo-regulation and earning Dryarn the highest comfort index among the fibres tested.

The second phase of the project, the wearing of Dryarn fabric in a room under CONTROLLED CLIMATE CONDITIONS, tested the actual behavior of a T-shirt made of Dryarn when worn under conditions of high exertion with significant perspiration. These tests were fundamental for evaluating the reaction of the fibre during sporting activities and to compare it to the results obtained from T-shirts similarly manufactured but in cotton and polyester respectively.

The test was conducted inside a climate-controlled room under constant temperature conditions °C) and relative humidity %). The athletes who took part in the test rode on a Cyclo Ergometer (inside the room) on which it was possible to monitor the effort expended, metabolic responses and heart rate. During each single test ride, the mean skin temperature, temperature and humidity of the T-shirt/skin microclimate, loss of moisture (through perspiration) and speed of drying of the T-shirts, both during the various test phases and at the end of the activity, were monitored.

India targets $30 bn in textile exports for FY12

In view of mounting demand for textiles and clothing in the western markets, Textiles Secretary Rita Menon said, the government has set a target of achieving $30 billion in exports during 2011-12.

Global economic slump badly hit textile exports during 2009-10, but then, they recovered and remained slightly above the set target of $25 billion during 2010-11.

The Minister said that, for the current fiscal year, they intend to export textiles and garments worth around US$28-30 billion.

She revealed that the global market situations was not in favour of textile exporters till November, 2010, but they started turning positive in the last quarter of 2010-11, as new export orders started flowing in.

As stated by the experts, though exporters started receiving sizeable orders from the US markets, the European markets are moving bit sluggishly, but still are above the pre-crisis levels.

Registering an annual rise of 4.23 percent, garment exports for 2010-11 grew to $11.1 billion, while cotton yarn exports grew by 42.87 percent to $5.66 percent.

Meanwhile, handicraft and carpet exports too registered a rise of 22 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

Around 50 percent of the textile exports from India are towards the US and Europe.

Unifi Inc released preliminary operating results for its third quarter ended March 27, 2011. Net sales increased $23 million, or 15 percent, to $178 million for the March 2011 quarter compared to net sales of $155 million for the prior year quarter. The Company reported a net loss for the third quarter of its 2011 fiscal year of $4.0 million, or $0.20 per share, compared to net income of $0.8 million, or $0.04 per share, for the prior year quarter.

Earnings for the March 2011 quarter included approximately $2.2 million of charges related to the early extinguishment of debt and a loss of $2.5 million from our investment in Parkdale America LLC, which compares to $2.0 million of income from Parkdale America in the prior year March quarter.

For the first nine months of the fiscal year 2011, the Company reported net income of $11.6 million, or $0.58 per share, compared to net income of $5.2 million, or $0.26 per share, for the prior year period. Net sales increased $73 million, or 17 percent, to $513 million for the fiscal year-to-date compared to net sales of $440 million for the prior year period.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for the March 2011 quarter were $12.3 million compared to adjusted EBITDA of $12.7 million for the prior year quarter. Adjusted EBITDA for the first nine months of fiscal year 2011 was $46.4 million compared to $41.1 million for the prior year period.

Shandong Ruyi Group to build Textile City

Wanzhou District in Chongqing has signed an agreement with the Shandong Ruyi Group to construct a Textile City at an investment of 15 billion Yuan.

Of this, 10 billion Yuan will be invested in the construction of industrial and support projects while 5 billion Yuan will be used in construction of commercial housing projects.

The city named "Western Textile City" will be built on 3,500 mu of land and the whole investment will be made by Shandong Ruyi Group.

The Textile City is located in the National Economic and Technical Development Zone of Wanzhou.

After completion, the city will be able achieve yearly sales of 50 billion Yuan, pay industrial taxes amounting to about one billion Yuan, and create 100,000 jobs.

Turkish textile sector to go organic with vengeance

Emre Kizilgünesler, Chairman of Aegean Clothing Manufacturers Association, or EGSD, recently while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the country’s first organic textile trade fair, said that, Turkey is all set to grow its exports of organic textiles.

The country’s overall textile exports for 2010 came to $15 billion, while its organic textile exports touched $60 million, with global organic textile market touching $6.8 billion, he said and added that, the country presently exports organic textile products to over 30 countries, and intends to boost its share in the world market in near future.

The trade show organised by the EGSD in the western province of Izmir commenced on April 14 and will went on till April 16.

Globally renowned firms like H&M, Otto, Adidas, Puma, Nike, GAP, Marks & Spencer, participated in the trade fair along with other textile companies from Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Jordan and the UK.

Shaw to shut its yarn plant in Chatsworth

Shaw Industries is to shortly close down its spun yarn plant in Murray in Chatsworth, Ga., which would affect 306 workers.

As stated by the company officials, the closure is a part of the company’s total adaptation from spun and stapled yarn to new filament-based carpets, which according to the customers gives a better feel and has better durability.

Al Scruggs, Director of Human Resources at Shaw Industries stated that, staple fibres are recoiling, though not completely but their sales are dropping. He further said that, they are not working on any deliberated plan, but are just following the consumer likings.

The company even shut its similar Georgia plants in Calhoun, Trenton, Ringgold and Stevenson, Ala., during 2008 and 2009.

Closure of the Ringgold plant resulted in loss of around 430 jobs. However, 200 of these workers were provided alternative employment in Calhoun based plant. On the whole, the company cut over 1,700 jobs in the Tri-State area based yarn plants during 2008 and 2009.

Scruggs said that, workers of the Plant 82 will be provided employment in any one of the three Shaw plants based in Chatsworth or in other facilities in vicinity.

Abundant yarn at affordable price available for domestic ancillary

Spokesman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has said that abundant yarn is available for domestic ancillary industry at comparatively low prices as against yarn available to regional competitors to produce textile products.

He said the yarn is available in Pakistan at $1.6-1.7/lb cotton parity price as against current international cotton @ $2.28/lb (A Index).

According to him, it is golden opportunity for the ancillary industry at prevailing yarn prices to perform and achieve 14 billion US$ textile exports this year.

In spite of all odds the spinning industry is supplying sufficient yarn to the textile ancillary industry at lowest prices prevailing in the region, he added.

He said the cotton production stood at 11.6 million bales in Pakistan uptill March 2011. Industry imported 1.4 million bales uptill Feb. 2011, leaving the industry short by 1.4 million bales for the remaining period till July 2011. Only an immediate import of one million bales can ensure continuing textile operations. Physical cotton at competitive prices is not available from international sources, he said.

It is interesting to note that spinning industry had exported 20% less yarn quantity this year under the free market mechanism i.e. at an average 48,000 tons per month uptill February 2011 as against 60,000 tons per month in 2009-10, under restricted regime.

Focus on offshore business pays off for Cavalier Bremworth

New Zealand carpet maker Cavalier Bremworth has grown its export business by 75% in the last 12 months following a concerted effort to further develop its offshore markets.

Gaining new distribution partners and developing more design-led products for the premium end of the market has helped it gain a much stronger foothold in the US. New products made from felted yarn were on show at the Las Vegas 'Surfaces' flooring show in January and have led to orders from New York-based Prestige Mills and Hibernia Woollen Mills in Los Angeles.

Cavalier Bremworth's parent company Cavalier Corporation has recently bought a 75% stake in Christchurch felted yarn plant Radford Yarns, with the intention of boosting its product development using this unique yarn structure.

Both Prestige and Hibernia specialise in high end wool carpets in a US market dominated by synthetics. Govt keen to revitalise textile sector – Minister

While pointing towards the enormous potential of Sudan in textiles, which makes it a leading country in the sphere of the textile industry, Awad Ahmed Al-Jazz, Minister of Industry avowed that his Ministry is keen on developing the industry.

Recently, the Minister convened a meeting with the workers of the El-Duwaim and Kosti textile factories where he stated that, development of the textile sector would be taken up as a part of the efforts to attain self-reliance and to boost value addition.

He emphasized on the significance of concentrating on the cotton sector as a leading arm of the country’s textile industry, and even fixed specific dates for revival and recommencement of the textile units of Shendi El-Duwaim, Kosti and Al-Haj Abdullah, in accordance with certain socio-economic plans.

Further, Dr. Al-Jazz even requested the Textile Committee at the Ministry of Industry and the administrators of the above units to look after the training and setting up of operations chambers in their units, in order to ensure sustainability of these units.

Moreover, he also underscored the significance of enhancing co-ordination between the administrations of these units and the state governments.

He fixed December 2011 as the date for commencement of revitalization process of the textile industry in Sudan.

Hamid Fabrics to float IPO to fund expansion

Hamid Fabrics Ltd, a subsidiary of Mahin Groupintends to raise Tk 1.5 billion through a public issue, to fund execution of its expansion plan, as there has been a rise in demand for its products from buyers.

The fabric making firm based in Narsingdi intends to utilize the funds for establishing a yarn-dyeing unit with an annual capacity of 15 million yards of fabrics. Hamid Fabrics presently has a weaving and a dyeing and finishing unit.

Construction work of the new unit would commence from July or August.

The Group might also set up a Tk 1.50-1.75 billion spinning facility with 50,000 spindles, after starting the yarn-dyeing project, which would help Hamid Fabrics to gain more self reliance.

The Group has H&M, Zara, Tesco, Wal-Mart, s. Oliver, Carrefour, Uniqlo, Gap, Esprit, Nike, Next, Tommy Hilfiger and Levis’ as its fabric buyers. The total turnover of the Group for 2010-11 stood at Tk 3.5 billion, with 2,000 workers.

Olim-Textile project commissioned

The opening ceremony of a new modern spinning mill was held in the suburbs of Khujand in the presence of Emomali Rakhmon, President of Tajikistan.

It is the Eurasian Development Bank (EBD)’s first investment project in this country. In 2009 the Bank provided a loan to build a modern spinning factory in Tajikistan capable of producing 5,000 tonnes of high quality cotton yarn annually. This project was implemented by Olim-Textile; the total project cost was $29.75 million with the Bank’s commitment of $22.57 million. In his address at the opening ceremony Emomali Rakhmon highly evaluated the Bank’s efforts and noted the efficient work of all the participants of the project, as well as their fruitful cooperation.

Kambar Shalgimbayev, Deputy Chairman of the Eurasian Development Bank Executive Board, said: “The project has significant positive effect on Tajikistan’s economic growth by supporting agriculture and textile industry and increasing employment and production output in related industries”.

In parallel with that, the project promotes mutual trade between the Bank’s member states: fine and medium cotton yarn will be supplied to Russian textile companies for manufacturing high quality jersey, terry and hosiery.

In Russia there is a trend for steady rise of cotton yarn import, principally due to traditional CIS suppliers such as Uzbekistan, and Turkey and India. In recent years there has been a strong demand for high grade yarn from Russian textile producers. The strategy of Olim-Textile envisages promotion of the company’s fine and medium grade yarn in the Russian market and partial substitution of other countries’ import.

DGFT issues modalities for cotton yarn export contract registration

Recently, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had issued a notification making export of cotton yarn free, but subject to registration of export contracts with DGFT for ITC (HS) Code 5205, 5206 & 5207.

In continuation, DGFT has informed that, all applications, for grant of registration certificate shall be submitted to the concerned RAs along with a copy of export contract and a copy of irrevocable Letter of Credit (LC) duly authenticated by an Indian Bank.

If the LC is not available, exporters may provide a FIRC from bank showing receipt of remittance from the concerned foreign buyer as proof of having received 100% advance payment or a minimum of 25% advance payment and balance cash against delivery (CAD).

Along with the above, a declaration/undertaking as given in Annexure-I of the Policy Circular, on the letter head of the firm and a copy of IEC, will have to be submitted.

If the documents received are found in order, the applicant shall be issued a Registration Certificate. Export against this registration certificate shall be completed within a period of 30 days from the date of issuance of such certificate, adds the circular.

The notification further informs that, failure to export the allowed quantity within the stipulated time would invite debarment from further registration. In addition, penal action as per Section 11(2) of the Foreign Trade (D&R) Act would be initiated.

Garment body appeals to keep exports of cotton yarn in negative list

Mr Rakesh Vaid, President, Garments Exporters Association - GEA has expressed disappointment at the removal of cotton yarn exports from the negative list and putting it under OGL with effect from April 1, saying that this will result in unchecked exports of yarn resulting in unchecked price increases and its scare supply in domestic market.

In a letter to Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Vaid pointed out that garment exporters have been undergoing serious crisis due to non-availability of adequate supply of cotton yarn at reasonable prices and requested him to put cotton yarn back on the negative list because of the extra ordinary and excessive rise in the price of cotton yarn.

He further said yarn exports constitute less than 10 per cent of overall textiles exports, but have a potential to derail exports of value added and job creating products like garments and made-ups.

Mr Vaid further pointed out that cotton yarn exports from India face little international competition, as most yarn producing nations preserve their domestic yarn supply for its industry. On the other hand, garment exports from India face stiff international competition.

Besides, being on top of the value chain, these exports are faced with high infrastructure deficiency and transaction costs.

"We hope that the government will take prompt and necessary steps to safeguard the interests of garment exporters. We also request the government to allow export of cotton only in a calibrated manner to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of cotton yarn at reasonable prices for the domestic industry," Mr Vaid said.

Multi-fold jump in Bt cotton acreage

The Association of Biotechnology-led Enterprises (ABLE) recently revealed that, owing to increased productivity and lower production cost, Bt cotton has met with a positive response from cotton cultivators in the country.

The Association even stated that, higher per acre yield, has even helped the country which used to be an importer of cotton a few years back, to turn to in to an exporter.

T M Manjunath, a renowned consultant on Agri-biotechnology while speaking on the sidelines of the release of his book on Bt Cotton said that, regardless of the opposition raised by some, cotton cultivators in the country have increased use of Bt cotton in a higher proportion and that no negative effects of crop cultivation have been seen on the cotton producing regions in the country.

Post commercialization, now Bt Cotton has been adopted for cultivation in most of the parts of the country, and is greatly benefiting the cultivators. According to ABLE, farmers who adapted Bt Cotton have made profits of Rs. 10,000 per hectare, in recent times.

India permits exports of cotton yarn

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce – India, yesterday announced that, exports of cotton yarn will be allowed beginning from April 1, 2011.

Export of cotton yarn (Tariff Codes 5205, 5206 & 5207) was earlier restricted, with exports allowed only against a license.

However, now, export of cotton yarn has been permitted subject to registration of export contracts with DGFT.

The contracts for export of cotton yarn shall be registered with DGFT prior to shipment. Clearance of cotton yarn consignments shall be given by customs after verifying that the contracts have been registered.

Cape textile cluster receives R220mn funding

Patricia de Lille, MEC for Social Development in the Western Cape, recently announced that, the government would be investing R220 million in the textile cluster of the region in the next one year.

The amount would be utilized for incentives and the Clothing and Textile Competitiveness Improvement Programme, which aids the partaking companies to boost their competitiveness levels by means of training and benchmarking.

Lille said that, there are brighter prospects for sustainable growth of the sector and they intend to persuade more and more firms to join the cluster programme.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster (CCTC) she stated that, there are around 14,000 workers who find direct employment in the province’s textile and clothing industry.

She said that, industry participants should endeavour to improve the quality of the produce.

Lille further said that, the basis of sustainability should necessarily be rooted in competitiveness of one’s righteousness, and added that, as far as the international trade is concerned, the nation’s clothing sector probably is the most aggressive and competitive one.

FY12 cotton output target may be fixed at 15mn bales

Agriculture Development Commissioner (ADC) Inayatullah Khan recently revealed that, the government may set the cotton production target for the coming 2011-12 crop season at 15 million bales.

Khan while addressing a three-day conference of Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC)’s research sub-committee, called upon the agriculture scientists to develop such varieties of Bt cotton which not only provides crops, resistance against diseases, but even subsists in water scarce situations and also is of a quality, demanded by the textile sector in the country.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and the provincial government’s research institutions alongside agriculture scientists from all the research institutions functioning under the PCCC remained present at the meeting and shared the outcomes of the experiments carried out on cotton during last year.

Further, he revealed that, research work for developing new varieties of Bt cotton is going on at CCRI Multan, and expressed optimism that the institution would shortly come out with some concrete results. Also, he said that the research projects of the agriculture scientists should be aimed at offering crop solutions to the crop cultivators at lowest possible cost.

Textile & garment sector to benefit from new export policy

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) made an announcement to the effect that, March 30, 2011 onwards the exporters would be entitled to permanent tax rebates in respect of their goods. The decision, amongst others, is looked upon to greatly benefit the textile, garment and many other industries.

With this decision, the tax-rebate system would be extended for all the exported items. The system was resumed on March 30, 2009 to aid the exporters to better survive the effects of the global economic slump.

Earlier in August 1983, it was decided to exclude the claims where the rebate amount was less than one percent of the FOB (free on board) prices of exported products, in view of the high administrative cost.

However, pursuant to the new provisions, March 30, 2011 onwards all the exporters would be entitled to rebates on their exports, irrespective of their value or share in the FOB prices of the items exported.

The move though would benefit the export of high-valued items, but the industries exporting goods produced while using low-cost import components and parts, like textiles and garments would be the biggest beneficiaries.

He while speaking to the members of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) said that, the government possibly may think over granting a reduction in the sales tax levy on domestic consumption of textile goods, but then he discarded the chances of government negotiating on documentation.

He urged the industrialists to share their views and give suggestions regarding the issue of sales tax imposition on domestic consumption of textiles, during the meeting that FBR is to hold on March 24 at either Karachi or Islamabad.

He revealed that the government would even have a relook of its decision of sales tax levy on capital goods by close of the current month. Further, while talking on illegal imports of fabrics, he said that the government is trying to rationalise the tax structure.

Presently, the Afghan transit goods are cleared on the basis of bank guarantee equal to the domestic taxes and duties, the FBR official said and added that, the actual delivery of these goods to Afghanistan are also being observed through electronic means.

Silk industry demands hike in fabric import duty

In the Indian Union Budget, announced last month, the import duty on raw silk (not thrown) was reduced from 30 percent to just 5 percent.

But the silk trade is demanding that in order to ensure that the fruit of the fall in levy reaches the silk sector, particularly the weavers, import duty on silk fabrics should be hiked from 10 percent to 40 percent.

This was echoed by Mr Narendra Kapoor, former President of Eastern UP Exporters' Association (EUPEA) and Mr Jagdish Das, President of Banarasi Vastra Udyog Sangh (BVUS), when fibre2fashion contacted them for their reactions.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr Kapoor said, “In 2005, about 400,000 meters of silk fabric was imported, which has now surged four times to around 1.6 million meters. This has mainly affected silk manufacturing centres like Varanasi, Bangalore, Surat and other centres in India.

He continued, “Mainly 60-gms quality of silk fabrics is imported from China, for which approximately 85-gms silk yarn is consumed. So, approximately 35,000 tons of silk yarn is consumed to produce 1.6 million meters of fabrics”.

“If this import is discouraged, the Chinese will have surplus yarn on hand, which will ultimately lead to a fall in prices of silk yarn, which have risen stupendously in recent times. For this reason alone, we are demanding a hike in silk fabric import duty”, he informed.

‘Withdraw 17% GST’ - Yarn merchants urge govt

A recently released statement revealed that, the Pakistan Yarn Merchants Association (PYMA) has raised apprehensions over levy of 17 percent general sales tax (GST) on domestic yarn consumption and has urged the government to withdraw the same on immediate basis.

The PYMA members from Sindh and Balochistan constituency, during an emergency meeting chaired by the Association Chairman Yakoob Nagaria, said that the government had taken such an inconsiderate decision abruptly and without consulting the stakeholders.

They further said that, the decision would severely hit the entire textile value chain, which is already confronted with issues like comparatively high cost of carrying on business in the country, high mark-up rates, soaring prices of cotton and raw materials, liquidity crisis and power crunch.

They sounded a caution that if the duty imposition is not retracted it would completely annihilate the small traders and producers of cotton, fabric and polyester yarn, and would also result in closure of a number of industrial units, leading to large scale unemployment.

The Association members have urged Prime Minster Yousuf Raza Gilani, President Asif Ali Zardari and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) authorities to immediately withdraw the duty imposition.

Cotton business in lurch over new tax

In an uncommon move, the Federal government of Pakistan has imposed a number of taxes on several industries, which includes sales tax on cotton and textile trade, which have a bearing on the fibre manufacturers, ginners and other segments down the value chain.

However, the trade and industry has urged the government to withdraw such duty imposition, but as the government has still not cleared its point, due to which domestic cotton sales are feeling the heat.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to withdraw the 17 percent sales tax levy on cotton ginners and fibre manufacturers, to ensure zero tax regime for the entire textile export chain.

According to the APTMA Chairman Gohar Ejaz, there is some sort of uncertainty as regards the impact; the March 15 order issued under the Presidential Ordinance would lay on the sector. Also, majority of the textile sub segments too have strongly condemned the new tax measures claiming that, these measures would not only strangle textile exports but would also give rise to large-scale corruption.

Due to all this, the industry leaders are lobbying against the government for withdrawal of the tax implications, but, meanwhile a majority of the trade activities in the cotton and textile business is stagnating.

Significant increase in visitors from Northern China at of SPINEXPO

The 17th edition of SPINEXPO Shanghai was held from March 8th-10th, 2011 at the Pudong Expo Center for the last time in that venue, and recorded the most substantial increase in visitors since the trade show first launched.

With 9,456 visitors for a Spring/Summer season as compared to 7,846 visitors for the previous Autumn/Winter edition, the increase in international visitors was 22%. This hefty increase was largely due to changes in our China promotion office and to its professionalism.

The office, based in Shanghai, was strengthened in terms of size and skills, and the team assigned to visitor information cleaned up our entire China database, removing over 50% of obsolete data and carrying out research region by region, thus increasing our communication with the textile industry to a considerable degree as well as our familiarity with Chinese niche textile markets that are constantly expanding.

The number of Chinese visitors rose to 7,741 as compared to 5,970 visitors for the previous season: it is noteworthy that the most significant increase came from Northern China, including Beijing and nearby provinces, where the number of visitors rose to 499 as compared to 271 for the previous season. Shanghai and nearby provinces also recorded a significant increase with 7,488 visitors as compared to 5,381 for the previous season.

Only the Southern China region remained unchanged, which underlined the importance of the work that was carried out, since provinces in this part of China were not included in the database enrichment process. We are encouraged by these results and will carry out similar work for Hong Kong and the province of Guangdong for the upcoming Autumn/Winter season.

Visitors from outside China also recorded a significant increase, rising from 1,046 for the previous season to 1,715 for this edition (+65%). Taiwan and Hong Kong recorded a drop compared to the previous edition, but Japan is rising, as well as the United States and South America. We have begun the same process on our USA database and are beginning to record results, with major decision-makers attending the trade fair from the USA and Europe.

Khadi textile fabrics have lowest carbon footprint – Designer

“The biggest advantage of wearing khadi textiles is that it carries the lowest carbon footprint among all textiles, which makes it a sustainable fabric”, said a noted textile designer.

Ahmedabad is playing host to a month long ‘Khadi Utsav’ in which more than 273 stalls have been set up, displaying khadi products from across various states of India.

The fair which began on March 6 will run till April 6, 2011. It will also feature a fashion show on March 18, where models will showcase khadi clothing designed by top-notch Ahmedabad based designers.

‘Brand Khadi’ a theme pavilion, one of the highlights of the trade fair, explains the origin of the khadi, including Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology woven around khadi.

Khadi textiles are normally made from 100 percent cotton, but nowadays cotton/polyester blended khadi fabrics and clothing are also available.

Khadi textiles apart from being eco-friendly are sustainable and also harmless to the skin. Production of one meter khadi fabric consumes just three litres water against 55 litres consumed in a conventional textile mill.

Yesterday, the organizers had organised a buyer-seller meet in which most of the khadi cooperatives from Gujarat as well as buyers, which included exporters were present.

According to estimates provided by Mr Punamchand Parmar (IAS) and Member Secretary – Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board, they had targeted a turnover of Rs 40 million from the Utsav, but now hope to cross Rs 50 million, looking at the steady stream of buyers.

220 workers affected by Christchurch yarn plant closure

220 textile workers are to lose their jobs, as Godfrey Hirst subsidiary Canterbury Spinners announces the closure of its plant in Bromley, Christchurch, following last month’s earthquake.

The National Distribution Union, which represents many of the workers, said that although there were satisfactory union negotiated redundancy provisions, the announcement came as a heavy blow for workers already reeling from the effects of the earthquake.

National Distribution Union (NDU) Southern Region Secretary Paul Watson said: “Not only has the plant been destroyed within a few seconds by a devastating earthquake but the future incomes and job security of 220 people have also been devastated.”

He said that union representatives had seen inside the plant and it seemed irreparable.

“The NDU has negotiated a satisfactory redundancy and relocation agreement which has been endorsed by union members. It is superior to the redundancy agreement that would have applied in normal circumstances.”

Paul Watson said the NDU would be also be immediately establishing a redundant workers support network, along similar lines to the very successful model put in place for Christchurch workers made redundant by Lane Walker Rudkin and Pacific Brands in 2009.

Paul Watson said no words could adequately describe the pain that will impact on families of those affected.

India to forge stronger trade & economic ties with Brazil

IVL closes deals with INVISTA & SK Chemicals

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited, the world's leading vertically integrated Polyester Value Chain producer, has completed the acquisition of two major deals that were announced at the end of 2010. In November, 2010, the IVL agreed to acquire from INVISTA, their Polyester resins and Polyester staple assets located at Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA and in Querétaro, Mexico.

The other acquisition concluded was South Korea's SK Chemicals entire issued capital of SK Eurochem Sp. z o.o., in Poland and PT SK Keris together with its subsidiary PT SK Fiber in Indonesia. This acquisition was first announced in December 2010. SK Eurochem Sp. z o.o. in Poland is a PET chips manufacturing facility having a capacity of 140,000 tons per annum.

PT SK Keris, Indonesia is a PET Chips and Polyester Filament Yarn manufacturing facility with a combined capacity of 160,000 tons per annum. PT SK Fiber Indonesia is a Polyester Filament Yarn manufacturing facility with a capacity of 36,000 tons per annum. The acquisition in Poland is virtually integrated with a third party supplier of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), further consolidating the Company's low cost structure.

Budget evokes mixed reactions from textile sector

The Indian textile industry has delivered mixed reactions to the budgetary announcements made by the Finance Minister – Mr Pranab Mukerjee. While a few have welcomed provisions of duty cuts, they have also denounced it, due to expectations being not fulfilled.

Mr Shailendra Pandey, VP Marketing - Indian Rayon, does not see much change, other than the decrease in import duty for wood pulp by 2.5%, a major raw material consumed by viscose producers.

He considers this a good step from the government since, wood pulp prices have gone up sky high, it will help viscose producers a little bit, as duty cut is marginal. He was however relived that rumours going on since February of hike in excise duty have not been proposed.

On the other hand Mr Dilip Samsukha, Partner - Indian Silk House termed the budget balanced, since a long pending demand of reducing basic customs duty on raw silk (not thrown) has been met, since it has been reduced from 30 to 5 per cent.

He is of the opinion that, the duty cut will definitely reduce silk prices, since there has been an acute shortage of yarn, due two which, prices have gone up by 30-40% in the last six months and expects the silk industry to benefit in the long run.

Mr UK Gangopadhyay, Director - Synthetic & Art Silk Mills' Research Association (SASMIRA) does not notice any encouragement from the budget, but is also happy that, there is no negativity associated with the budget.

Mr Gangopadhyay is unhappy due to the fact that, whatever proposals had been put forward have not been accepted by the Finance Minister.

Fashion designers vouch for viscose fabrics

To promote consumption and to propagate the inherent qualities of viscose yarn, the Association of Man-Made Fibre Industry in India (AMFII) organised a day long event - ‘Viscose Connect 2011’ in Surat, which concluded with a dazzling fashion show, presented by top-notch designers of India.

The morning session included interactions between the top officials of the three viscose filament yarn producers; Century Rayon, Kesoram Rayon and Indian Rayon and those from across the textile value-chain in Surat, which included weavers and embroiders.

These round-table deliberations were meant to inform the Surat textile value-chain about the properties of fabrics made from viscose filament yarn like very good water absorbency and eco-friendliness. They were also informed that, an array of woven fabrics like crepe, georgette, satin, velvet and taffeta are manufactured using VFY, thus providing a complete fabric solution.

They were further told that, unlike most man-made fibres, rayon is not synthetic. It is made from wood pulp, a cellulosic based raw material which is naturally-occurring, bio-degradable and is a renewable resource. It is eco-friendly & similar to those of natural cellulosic fibres, such as cotton or linen, than those of other man-made fibres such as nylon or polyester

Peruvian textile sector to gain from Transpacific agreement

Peruvian textile and clothing industry is likely to benefit from the Transpacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), as the agreement would help it to earn trade benefits by associating with new countries for sourcing raw materials.

TPP is seen to open up the way for Peru to get new suppliers, and even if it fails to crack a deal with India for importing yarns, it is certain to crack one with Vietnam or Malaysia.

India’s decision of imposing a ceiling on cotton and yarn exports, has affected the supply of raw materials to some of the textile and clothing firms in Peru.

Quite contrarily, the Peruvian clothing and textile industry, which at a point in time believed that, imports from India would hurt the domestic industry, is now waiting for India to lift the ceiling imposed on cotton and yarn imports, so that it can smoothly carry on its production activities.

Weaving workshop to promote bamboo fabric

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) in 2009, along with the CODE-NGO, In-Hand Abra Foundation and the Department of Trade Industry financed a workshop to train loom weavers on bamboo yarn.

In-Hand Abra Foundation, with an intention to boost the promotion of bamboo development in the Abra region, instituted a loom weaving workshop, where a textile designer from India imparted training to two Abra weavers who took part in the training.

Similarly, a natural dye unit was also set up in the region to regulate the colour scheme and the dye sources which employ locally available resources, technology and expertise. In addition to this, designs with ethnicity and originality were embellished on the bamboo blouses and shirts which well reflected the uniqueness of the culture and art of Abra.

Moreover, the conventional two-pedal looms were converted to four and eight pedal looms to better suit the new age modern designs, techniques, weaving patterns and wider width.

The denim fabric sector in Pakistan has recently seen a developmental stage and over the last few years, there has been a rapid growth and expansion in production capacity in the country. There has been a phenomenal increase in denim output in the last few years, with exports accounting for a major portion of the production.

However the rising prices of raw cotton which has more than doubled in the last one year, is creating major stumbling blocks and giving sleepless nights to denim producers as finished goods prices have not risen proportionately. These have taken a toll on their operating margins and in turn profit margins, too.

Denim International is a specialized producer of denim fabric, with a capacity of 10 million meters per annum. Its plant is located in Karachi and the plant occupies over 100,000 sq ft of covered space. It manufactures all types of 100% cotton as well as polyester and stretch denim fabrics.

The company has installed state-of-the–art technologies and the plant is equipped with high speed warping with electronic yarn sensors and tensioners to ensure superior quality. It has also chosen the latest technology in dyeing and sizing to achieve the best results and a weaving section with 70 Tsudakoma air-jet looms.

The company exports 60% of its produce, with the rest accounted for by the domestic market. Again out of which, a major portion is exported as clothing.

Removal of cap on speciality & technical yarn exports

The recently imposed export limit on the producers of yarn has been removed, particularly on manufacturers of value-added speciality as well as technical yarn, but it is subjected to certain conditions.

Another reason for respite in case of exports of cotton yarn, particularly those made from imported cotton, is that it will no longer require a certification from the excise authorities in case the cotton had been imported on or after October 1, 2010. Official recognition or certification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) will be adequate for the purpose.

The respite came about a week before, in a written notice which was issued by the Ministry of Commerce. All export-oriented and textile companies involved in the production of value added speciality and technical yarn have been exempted by DGFT from the export limit, if they can prove that they had been exporting since the last two years.

The overall output of speciality and technical yarn is around 50-60 million kg annually, a minor part of the 3,600 million kg of all kinds of yarns manufactured in India. But it is important to note that, this small segment of manufactured yarn is mainly meant for export purpose.

New importation policy to raise unemployment

According to the State Governor of Lagos, Babatunde Fashola, the Federal Government’s new importation policy of lifting the ban on imports of goods which were previously prohibited, would raise the ratio of joblessness in the country.

The official stated this while speaking to the members of the Ambassadors Club at the University of Lagos, Akoka, during a youth empowerment programme.

He said that, as per the Federal Government’s recent directions, banned products like clothing and textiles are still accessible in the Nigerian market, and the best way out is to legally allow their importation into the country.

It is interesting to note that, the decision of lifting the ban on textile imports has come about within a few months of the Federal Government’s move of allocating N50 billion for refurbishment of the country’s textile industry.

Textile experts deride once-a-month pricing policy

Textile experts have not taken kindly to the policy being formulated by the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs (MEA) requiring producers across the textile value-chain to change prices of their products to just once-in-a-month.

The MEA according to reports emanating from Taiwan has suggested the once-in-a-month pricing policy to safeguard the interests of the downstream producers like fabric manufacturers to protect them from the volatility of raw material prices as well as ensure adequate supplies.

Global cotton prices have shot through the roof in recent months, amid a skewed global supply-demand gap of the commodity. Along the way, producers of man-made fibres too picked up the cue and prices of PSF alone have increased by 19 percent in 2011.

However, experts opine that market prices in the long run are driven by the factor of supply-demand and it would be erroneous on the part of the government to artificially regulate prices of textile raw materials.

They add by saying that at a time when global prices of cotton are is under going high volatility, it would become impossible or even suicidal for anyone in the textile value-chain to stick to a single price for the course of a whole month.

AMFII to host event & fashion show to promote viscose

India is the second largest producer of viscose filament yarn (VFY) in the world. To promote consumption and to propagate the inherent qualities of viscose yarn, the Association of Man-Made Fibre Industry in India (AMFII) is organizing an event - ‘Viscose Connect 2011’ in Surat on February 25, 2010. The day long activities will conclude with a fashion show in the evening.

Cotton prices surge 16% in eight days

With each passing day, raw cotton prices in India are creating new milestones and the pace with which it has increased in the last few days as left everyone across the cotton textile value chain breathless, except the farmers who are laughing all the way to the bank.

Yesterday, raw cotton prices of the Shankar – 6 variety in the Gujarat market were hovering between Rs 57000-58,000 per candy (One candy = 356 kg) against Rs 50,000-50,500 per candy on February 1. In effect, in a space of eight working days, prices have shot up by a staggering 16 percent and also are more than double the prices prevailing at the same time last year.

Within the first week of the new Indian cotton market year 2010-11, prices opened with a big bang. On October 4, 2010, Shankar - 6 quality was quoted at Rs 38,000 per candy, against just Rs 22,800 per candy on the same day in 2009, up by more than an astounding 66 percent.

The cotton farmers who had been at the receiving end all these years due to unremunerative prices, are upping the ante, by holding on to their produce, which in turn is further fuelling a already bullish market, as buyers who include spinners and exporters are becoming more frantic, to corner stocks, before prices become more dearer.

ITMA seals partnership with IWTO

The organiser of ITMA 2011 and 2015, MP International signed a working agreement with International Wool Textile Association (IWTO). The agreement was inked at the IWTO industry briefing in Paris, France.

Owned by CEMATEX, ITMA is the world’s largest textile and garment technology showcase held since 1951. Set up in 1930, IWTO is the international body representing the interests of the world’s wool textile trade and industry.

The agreement signifies the start of a new partnership that is in line with the introduction of the new fibre and yarn chapter at ITMA 2011. Covered in this new chapter are natural, man-made and technical fibres, and natural, synthetic and technical yarns. Cotton price trends – Going down memory lane

Would you, our valued reader believe us, if we told you that cotton prices shot up by a staggering 607.95 percent between 1931 and 1950 or for that matter they surged by a mind-boggling 332.87 percent in February 2011, when compared with the average cotton prices prevailing in 2001.

Or that after having touched a peak of 35.34 cents per pound in 1919, prices of cotton slipped back to 5.66 cents per pound in 1931, down 83.98 percent, which is the lowest cotton price ever recorded in history and lower than 5.73 cents per pound registered in the year 1898.

Cotton prices are surmounting new peaks with each passing day in the last few months, mainly due to a serious demand-supply mismatch and also thanks to speculation. Fibre2fashion delved in to the annals of the cotton history and compiled and analyzed data beginning from 1876.

Cotton prices have crossed new milestones and also fallen steeply in various years from the time a record of cotton prices was begun to be maintained in 1876. In 1876, the average price of cotton stood at 9.71 cents per pound, which fell to 5.73 cents per pound in 1898 after having touched a high of 10.66 cents per pound in 1881.

In 1903, cotton prices once again ascended to 10.49 cents per pound, up 83.05 percent when corresponded with those prevailing in 1898, in a matter of just five years. In 1914, prices slipped once again to 7.35 cents per pound to once again surge phoenix-like to 35.34 cents per pound in 1919, up by a magnificent 380.16 percent, again in a period of just five years.

After having fallen to just 5.66 cents per pound in 1931, the lowest in history, cotton prices oscillated between 5.66 cents per pound and 28.58 cents per pound for a period of 30 years between 1919 and 1949 and touched the 40.07 cents per pound mark in 1950 to post a growth of 40.20 percent, when compared with 1949.

Unifi sales rise; will open recycling center in early May

Unifi Inc released preliminary operating results for the quarter ended December 26, 2010. The Company reported net income for its second quarter of the 2011 fiscal year of $5.4 million, or $0.27 per share, compared to net income of $2.0 million, or $0.10 per share, for the prior year quarter ended December 27, 2009. Net sales increased $19 million, or 13 percent, to $161 million for the December 2010 quarter compared to net sales of $142 million for the prior year quarter. Highlights for the quarter include:

• The quarter over prior year quarter increase in net sales was primarily a result of improvement across substantially all of the Company's global operations as the economic recovery continues to strengthen;
• Operating results and working capital improvements resulted in a $7 million increase in cash-on-hand during the quarter; and,
• Adjusted earnings before income taxes, depreciation and amortization (adjusted EBITDA) increased $2.4 million over the prior year December quarter to $15.7 million.

The Company reported net income of $15.6 million, or $0.78 per share, for the first six months of fiscal year 2011 compared to net income of $4.4 million, or $0.22 per share, for the prior year period. Net sales increased $50 million, or 17 percent, to $335 million for the first half of the fiscal year compared to net sales of $285 million for the prior year period. Adjusted EBITDA for the first half of fiscal year 2011 was $34.1 million compared to $28.4 million for the prior year period.

Indian synthetic textile exports feel the blues

Indian synthetic textile sector is contemporary and has good growth potential to emerge as a major outsourcing hub. But, presently the synthetic textile industry is not in a healthy condition.

During 2008-09 Indian synthetic textile exports amounted to Rs 15,767 crores, which increased to Rs 16,861 crores in 2009-10. But of late, exports of the same fell by 1% to reach Rs 3, 852 crores during April-June 2010-11 from Rs 3,898 crores in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The situation worsened with a 20% drop to touch Rs 3,464 crores during the second quarter of 2010-11 as against the Rs 4,910 crores in the corresponding periods of the preceding year.

Polyester yarn prices have increased by 40%. Prices of polyester staple fibre are also witnessing an increasing trend during the recent past. Increasing prices of polyester staple yarn and inconsistent supply of raw materials are the major factors affecting the growth of the industry.

Appreciating rupee value and a radical reduction in the duty draw back rates from 10.5% to 8.5% have also played their part in worsening the situation. Export target of USD 3.7 billion fixed by the Government during 2010-11 is likely to stay unachieved. Future plans to achieve an export target of USD 7 billion by 2014 may also be affected to a greater extent.

TexMin proposes budget allocation of Rs 80 billion for textile sector

The Textiles Ministry recently revealed that, it would urge the government to raise the budgetary allocation for the sector under the 2011-12 budget to Rs 80 billion, so as to enable the Ministry to achieve the target set for development of the sector.

In the current fiscal year’s budget, the government had allocated Rs 56.08 billion for the sector as a whole, of which Rs 47.25 billion were towards planned expenditure, while Rs 8.8308 billion were meant for non-planned expenditure.

The Ministry in response to the question as to how much budgetary provision does it seek under the forthcoming 2011-12 budget said that, it is eyeing to get around Rs 70 to 80 billion, and added that, such allocation would help the sector to achieve the growth targets fixed for development across diverse fibre chains.

But then, the Ministry even stated that, in spite of their demands the final allocation would be decided by the government, it being an allocation to assist the development of various Ministries.

The Ministry stated that, with higher allocation they propose to establish more mega clusters.

Further that, a one-time grant of two billion rupees was proposed by the government for the Tamil Nadu government under the current fiscal year’s budget. The grant was intended for setting up of a zero liquid discharge plant at Tirupur, so as to enable sustenance of the domestic knitwear industry.

Tuscarora Yarns to open plant in Rowan County

Gov. Bev Perdue announced that Tuscarora Yarns Inc, a leading yarn manufacturer, will locate a new facility in Rowan County. The company plans to create 124 jobs and invest $6.3 million during the next three years in China Grove. The project was made possible in part by a $146,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

“As a home-grown company Tuscarora Yarns knows North Carolina is a great place to do business,” said Gov. Perdue. “Our workforce and training programs – especially in the textile industry – are second to none. It’s great news that Tuscarora is creating and retaining jobs right here in the Tar Heel State.”

Tuscarora Yarns has operated yarn manufacturing mills in North Carolina since 1899. The company is a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of heather and mélange yarns and produces a variety of yarns for applications such as sportswear, underwear, hosiery, sweaters, home furnishings and automotive components. The company currently employs 57 in China Grove and plans to move its operation to a larger, more modern facility.

Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual wage for the new jobs will be $27,334 not including benefits. The Rowan County average annual wage is $36,036.

HCM City firm launches new fibre plant

Century Synthetic Fiber Corporation, a firm based in the HCM City, intending to boost its fibre output to better meet the demands of the domestic and export markets, recently started a new fibre plant in Trang Bang Industrial Park in the southern province of Tay Ninh.

The Chairman and CEO of the firm, Dang Trieu Hoa said that, the new US $19.5 million worth facility has an annual capacity to manufacture 11,000 tons of Draw Textured Yarn (DTY) by using polyester chips. Addition of this new facility has thus boosted the company’s overall annual production capacity to 25,000 tons, he added.

The firm further said that, as the new plant is equipped with latest machines fetched from Oerlikon Barmag Group based in Germany, the fibre items produced in this plant would be such to suit the needs of the domestic as well as global customers.

The demand for DTY both in the domestic as well as international market is growing rapidly and hence the company proposes to invest $12.2 million in the second stage of the plant which would further add a capacity to produce another 10,000 units per year, Hoa said. The second stage of the plant is likely to start its operation next year, he added.

The Corporation contributes 15 percent of the country’s overall DTY production, which totalled to 166,000 tons, last year.

The company generated revenue worth around VND500 billion, last year and intends to increase the same to almost double with the new facility going functional.

Thread producer ACA buys out competitor

Cape Town based sewing thread manufacturer ACA Threads has bought competitor A&E South Africa in a deal which shows faith in the future of South Africa’s often beleaguered textile industry.

A&E is the South African subsidiary of US Company American & Efird.

The combined turnover of the two companies is around R70-million per year. Acquired as a going concern, the 55 staff members from A&E’s Epping premises will be incorporated with the 86 staff at ACA Threads Brackenfell factory during the course of the year.

Eckhard Marshing, CEO of ACA Group, says the deal will ensure a world class supply base to satisfy existing and growing needs of retail for strong local manufacturing businesses. “There is an increasing trend to look inside of South Africa and its neighbouring countries as the Chinese are starting to retain their goods for their own use, and import prices and logistical challenges attached to importing increase. South Africa is realizing that we need a solid local supply base, and government is supporting the process through its production incentive programs.”

Gujarat to be Global Technical Textile Hub

The Gujarat textile sector attracted investments amounting to around Rs 252 billion at the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit - 2011. In all 139 MoUs were inked at the 2011 summit out of which 34 MOU's are from the emerging Technical Textiles sector. The total investment in Textiles sector is expected to create employment opportunities for around 140,448 people.

The major portions of the investments were made in the Spinning sector, followed by Technical Textiles and rest was accounted for by textile parks, fabric processing and apparel sector. The total investment in technical textiles sector totaling to Rs 45.50 billion (USD 1 billion), which in turn will generate employment for around 12,340 people.

Among the major overseas investors is Finland-based Ahlstrom Fiber composites, a leader in medical textiles and which already has an operational Nonwovens plant in Mundra and is now planning to invest another Rs 400 million. Another Austrian investor is TenCate Geosynthetics Austria Gmbh, which is investing Rs 1 billion and will generate employment for around 100 people.

From amongst the domestic textile investors are Welspun India which is investing Rs 7 billion, Chiripal Poly Films Ltd is investing Rs 10 billion to produce BOPP and BOPET and similar expansion in both (film/yarn for application in technical textile) and Alok Industries is investing Rs 6 billion in expansion of existing capacities and processing for technical textiles.

Others include Narmada Thermal Power Ltd in a Polyester Film (BOPET) plant at a cost of Rs 4 billion; Sumilon Polyester Ltd is investing Rs 2.5 billion in a Pet Film and Metalised Polyester Film unit and GIT Textiles Manufacturing Limited is setting up a technical textiles weaving unit by investing Rs 1 billion.

Shubh Polyfilms Pvt Ltd is investing Rs 2.09 billion to produce BOPET Films, Modern Denim Ltd is investing Rs 1.98 billion to produce protective and sportswear fabrics and a technical textiles park is being setup by Hi Tech Technical Textile Park India at a cost of Rs 1 billion.

In the Jan. 7 issue of the journal Science, co-authors working in the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute of UT Dallas describe the use of “bi-scrolling” to solve these problems.

“In this study, we demonstrated the feasibility of using our bi-scrolled yarns for applications ranging from superconducting cables to electronic textiles, batteries and fuel cells,” said Dr. Ray H. Baughman, Robert A. Welch Professor of Chemistry and director of the UT Dallas NanoTech Institute.

Bi-scrolled yarns get their name from the way they are produced: A uniform layer of guest powder is placed on the surface of a carbon nanotube web. This two-layer stack is then twisted into a yarn.

Govt likely to reopen cotton yarn export ceiling

The ceiling on cotton yarn exports is expected to be reopened by the textile and commerce ministries. As per the ministry sources, the policy on the ceiling of cotton yarn exports is likely to be announced within two week’s time.

The secretaries of both the ministries met the stakeholders from the textile industry in New Delhi, last week. The Central government had imposed a ceiling of 720 million kg on cotton yarn export, this year. The export licenses of cotton yarn manufacturer had terminated on January 15.

About 670 million kg of cotton yarn had been exported till the above mentioned deadline. Now, the ceiling is expected to be increased in order to permit the exporters to fulfill their commitments, as has been done in case of cotton by the Union government.

According to an expert, spinning mills in India have a total capacity to export around 850 million kg of cotton yarn every year. Imposition of a ceiling on the export of cotton yarns weakens the standing of the exporters in the global market.

Since the value of yarn is twice that of the cotton, therefore Indians lose significant foreign exchange by shipping raw cotton. The country would reach an unfavorable position by exporting 720 million kg cotton yarn and 900 million kg raw cotton this year.

The spinning mills in India have been always increasing their production capacity. Every year, three million spindles are being added. This also generates job opportunities. Therefore, more attention should be given on the export of yarn and fabric rather than on cotton.
