Green production can help Bangladesh textile industry

Adoption of clean and resource efficient production techniques can greatly help the 1,700 textile washing, dyeing and finishing units to save their money as well as resources, according to Syed Nayeem Emran, Team Leader of Textiles and Apparels of South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF), an organization managed by International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Citing an example, he said, adoption of clean and resource efficient production techniques helped 12 factories in Dhaka to jointly save one million USD and 800 million litres of water annually.

The 12 factories formed a part of the pilot project conducted by the IFC, in association with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the UK Department for International Development, with an intention to help the Bangladeshi industries to meet the rising pressure from the side of global buyers for adherence of environmental norms, as also the increasing regulatory as well as societal pressure for compliance of the same.

Speaking at a seminar titled "Resource Efficiency and Environment Compliance Initiatives to Sustain Export Growth", held on the sidelines of BATEXPO 2011 in Dhaka, former President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Tipu Munshi said Bangladesh should focus on retaining its increasing apparel export growth and environmental norms at its factories.
